Global Food Security Seminar

Global Food Security Seminar

"...the United States is leading an effort to reach out to people around the world who are suffering, to provide them immediate assistance and to extend support for food security that will help them lift themselves out of poverty. All of us must join together in this effort, not just because it is right, but because by providing assistance to those countries most in need, we will provide new markets, we will drive the growth of the future that lifts all of us up." - President Barack Obama

"The question is not whether we can end hunger, it's whether we will." -  Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton

The Global Food Security Seminar is a part of the ECA’s flagship Fulbright Program and includes students in the fields of agricultural and environmental sciences, biology and biomedical sciences, economics, engineering, and public health.  In 2010, its inaugural year, this four-day event was held in Lincoln, NE from October 20 – 24. The seminar introduces participants to technological innovators, scientists, and experts in academia, public-private consortia, private sector companies, policy groups, and research and development laboratories.

The seminar focused on the important topic of Global Food Security and showcased individuals and organizations who are working towards advancing sustainable, agriculture-led growth to increase availability of food for growing populations, to make food affordable, and to increase incomes of the poor.  Fulbright participants engage in interactive discussions with experts on the topic of creating sustainable food systems; visit innovative research organizations, laboratories and farms to learn about the new research and development technologies in agriculture; and participate in a problem-solving exercise addressing a specific aspect of the food security challenge.
