April 2005 Meeting

The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) conducted its April 2005 quarterly meeting in New York City on the campus of Baruch College. Board Member Rita DiMartino, a Trustee of the City University of New York, laid the groundwork for the meeting there. The FSB launched the New York event by attending a dinner for Fulbright Students as part of an enrichment seminar sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and arranged by the Institute of International Education (IIE). FSB Chair Steven J. Uhlfelder and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Academic Programs Thomas Farrell delivered remarks at the dinner. The next day, the Board visited the headquarters of IIE and met with officers responsible for administering Fulbright programs worldwide. The FSB members convened on the campus of Baruch College for reports on the Fulbright Program from Deputy Assistant Secretary Farrell and IIE Vice President Mary Kirk, who chaired a panel of Fulbrighters. The FSB members also attended a luncheon meeting hosted by Dr. Kathleen Waldron, President of Baruch College and a Fulbright alumna, Dennis Slavin, Associate Provost of Baruch College, and Baruch faculty who are alumni of the Fulbright Program. Comments from two of the attending Fulbrighters are below.
