December 2008 Meeting

The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) held its fourth quarterly meeting in December 2008 in Washington, DC. Election of FSB officers for 2009 took place.  Ms. Shirley M. Green was re-elected Chair and Ms. Jean Becker was elected Vice Chair.  Copies of the just-released FSB 2007-2008 annual report were distributed to members and guests.

Highlights of the Board meeting included presentations made by Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Goli Ameri and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Academic Programs Thomas A. Farrell.  FSB Board Member Kathryn Hubbard briefed the Board about her participation at a reception celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the U.S.-France Fulbright Program that took place in September at the official residence of the French Ambassador in Washington, DC.

Executive Director Pat Schaefer briefed the Board on a seminar and reception she attended in November hosted by the Italian Ambassador in Washington, DC in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the U.S.-Italy Fulbright Program.  She also reported on the ceremony Assistant Secretary Ameri and the Department of State hosted in November honoring Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who was awarded the Fulbright Association’s 2008 J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding.

The Department of Education’s International Education Programs Service Director Richard La Pointe and his staff reported on the Fulbright-Hays Program.  The Board also welcomed two student panels, one made up of International Fulbright Science and Technology awardees and another made up of Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants.  Their stories and experiences provided the Board members with useful perspectives and feedback on their respective programs.
