June 2009 Meeting
The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) held its quarterly meeting in Washington, DC, on June 1-2, 2009. On June 1, members of the Board attended a reception and pre-view of the photographic works of Fulbright alumna Kristina Williamson hosted by the Chairman of the Woodrow Wilson Center Southeast Europe Project John Sitilides. Ms. Williamson was a 2004-2005 U.S. Fulbright Student to Greece.
On June 2, FSB Chair Shirley M. Green welcomed Deputy Assistant Secretary for Academic Programs Alina L. Romanowski to her first meeting in that position. Presentations were made by Acting Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs C. Miller Crouch, Deputy Assistant Secretary Romanowski, and Otilia Macedo Reis, Executive Director of the Luso-American Educational (Fulbright) Commission.
Board members shared reports on their participation in Fulbright activities since the previous meeting. Anita McBride and Robert McCallum reported on a 60th anniversary event for the U.S.-Greece Fulbright Program and Robert McCallum briefed about the 50th anniversary event for Title VI of the Higher Education Act, both held in Washington, DC in March. Anita McBride also reported on the Fulbright Student Enrichment Seminar in New York in April and the Fulbright Executive Directors’ Meeting in Vancouver, Canada, in May. Dina Habib Powell reported on the Institute of International Education’s New Leaders Benefit in New York City, in May.
Two panel presentations by current and alumni Fulbrighters were a highlight of the meeting. The first panel was moderated by Ms. Reis and consisted of Fulbright Scholars and Students from the U.S.-Portugal Program. The second panel was moderated by Jennifer Gibson, Chief of the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program Branch, with Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program participants. Director of the Office of Global Educational Programs Paul Hiemstra gave an overview of the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program and the launch of the Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching.
