Slovak applicants are drawn primarily from the humanities and social sciences, although roughly one-third of the candidate pool contains highly qualified academics from the natural sciences.
Opportunities in the U.S. for Slovaks
Though modest in size, the program in the Slovak Republic has been tailored to advance the country's efforts to develop a democratic society and market economy. American Scholar grantees lecture or conduct research in a diversity of disciplines, from literature to economics to the physical sciences. Preference is given to subjects related to the U.S. and to applicants who will assist with curriculum and program development at their Slovak host institutions. High priority is given to American Studies, social sciences and education (including Special Education). U.S. graduate students conduct research in all fields, although knowledge of Slovak is required for projects in Slovak Literature, Language and History. English Teaching Assistantships are also available for American graduate students.
