Ethnomusicologist and hip-hop producer Canyon Cody has released Granada Doaba, a collaboration album featuring original music by local artists he recorded while on a Fulbright grant in Granada, Spain. The album combines flamenco, Andalusian and hip-hop elements.
During his Fulbright year in Granada, Canyon researched southern Spain’s musical history, in particular the multicultural influences – Arabic, Ladino and Roma (Gypsy) – that mixed with traditional Spanish music to create Flamenco and other forms of Andalusian music. Granada’s historic reputation as a meeting point of various cultures continues today as immigrants from North Africa, Latin America and the Roma diaspora call the city home and contribute to the city’s thriving music scene.
Canyon spent his Fulbright year living in a studio above a flamenco guitar shop in the city, where local musicians would come to jam during siesta. The album is a product of these sessions.
NPR’s All Things Considered and PRI's The World interviewed Canyon (and his co-producer, Gnotes) about the album and his Fulbright experience in Granada. The NPR interview features some of the tracks from Granada Doaba. The Fulbright Program’s My Fulbright Life podcast series also interviewed Canyon while he was still in Spain in 2008 finishing his project.
