Dr. Simmons collaborates with a Ukrainian colleagueDr. Hortense Simmons, Professor Emeritus at California State University – Sacramento, lectured on African-American Literature and Culture as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar in Ukraine in 2004 and 2005. Participating in conferences and lecturing throughout the country, Dr. Simmons prepared curricula in African-American Studies for four Ukrainian universities. Her teaching was highlighted by Ukrainian newspapers and television, and she met with the mayor of Mykolayiv to discuss her experiences working with American and Ukrainian students. A formal presentation at Petro Mohyla Mykolayiv State University featuring Dr. Simmons’ donated collection of books and videotapes was well-attended by faculty and students. Now, she says, “Petro Mohyla probably has the finest selection of books and videotapes on African-American literature in the country.”
