Fulbright-Hays Programs

A portion of the Fulbright Program is a Congressional appropriation to the United States Department of Education for the Fulbright-Hays Program. These grants are awarded to individual U.S. K-14 pre-teachers, teachers and administrators, pre-doctoral students and post-doctoral faculty, as well as to U.S. institutions and organizations. Funding supports research and training efforts overseas, which focus on non-Western foreign languages and area studies.

The Fulbright-Hays programs were created in 1963 as an amendment to the Fulbright Act.  The programs were assigned to the U.S. Office of Education (now the U.S. Department of Education) under an Executive Order because their purpose matched the objectives of Education's domestically-based foreign language and area studies programs authorized under Title VI of the Higher Education Act.

The Fulbright-Hays Program includes:

*Congressional action on the financial year (FY) 2011 budget substantially reduced funds available for grants under the Fulbright-Hays Program. Therefore, no new awards will be made under the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad and Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Programs in FY 2011.
