The Fulbright Program in Japan was established in 1952 and is administered by the Japan-United States Educational Commission (JUSEC).

Grants are available annually for Japanese students to pursue Master's and Ph.D. degrees in the U.S. Grants are also available for Japanese scholars to lecture and conduct research at U.S. universities.

Opportunities in the U.S. for Japanese

Grants to Japan for U.S. citizens are offered in the student and scholar categories. Awards are available annually for postgraduate students. In addition, awards are given to recent university graduates for language study and research at universities outside Tokyo. Grants are available for U.S. scholars to conduct research or lecture in Japan as well as awards for journalists. The International Education Administrators (IEA) program, which sends participants on an intensive three week group program to learn more about Japanese higher education, society and culture. U.S. scholars also may engage in short-term projects in Japan through the Fulbright Specialist Program.

    • The Fulbright Program in Japan is administered by the Japan-United States Educational Commission (Fulbright-Japan).

    • Students

      Fulbright Foreign Student Program

      The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables graduate students, young professionals, and artists from abroad to research and study in the United States for one year or longer.

      Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program

      The Fulbright FLTA Program, a component of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, provides young teachers of English as a Foreign Language the opportunity to refine their teaching skills and broaden their knowledge of American cultures and customs while strengthening the instruction of foreign languages at colleges and universities in the United States.

      Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program

      The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program provides grants to lecture and/or conduct postdoctoral research at U.S. institutions for an academic semester to a full academic year.

      Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (SIR) Program

      The Fulbright SIR Program brings scholars and professionals from abroad to U.S. college and university campuses for a semester or an academic year, primarily to teach undergraduate courses. SIR grantees also assist in developing curricula and serve as a resource for faculty, students, and the community.

      Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program (FLTA)

      The Fulbright FLTA program is a nine-month, non-degree program providing future teachers of English with the opportunity to refine their skills, increase their English language proficiency, and extend their knowledge of U.S. society and culture while strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities, and some high schools.

      Fulbright U.S. Student Program

      The Fulbright U.S. Student Program enables U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals, and artists to study abroad for one academic year.

       

      The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

    • Scholars

      Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program

      The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program sends American scholars and professionals abroad to lecture and/or conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.

      Fulbright Specialist Program

      The Fulbright Specialist Program, a short-term complement to the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program, sends U.S. faculty and professionals to serve as expert consultants on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning, and related subjects at overseas academic institutions for a period of 2 to 6 weeks.

      The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program is administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES).
