Grants are available for Finnish students to pursue undergraduate study or Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in the U.S. Post-doctoral research and lecturing opportunities are also offered to Finnish scholars. Finnish teachers can apply for a direct one-for-one exchange with counterparts in the U.S.

Opportunities in the U.S. for Citizens of Finland

The Fulbright Program awards grants to American graduate students who hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree. Academically talented graduating seniors may also apply prior to receiving their degrees. Grants to American scholars enable them to hold lecturing or lecturing/research positions at institutions of higher education in Finland (subject to invitation by the institution). The scholar grants are awarded for periods up to a full academic year. The Fulbright Teacher Exchange provides American teachers the opportunity to teach in Finland

    • The Fulbright Program in Finland is administered by the Finland-U.S. Educational Exchange Commission.

      Fulbright Foreign Student Program

      The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables graduate students, young professionals, and artists from abroad to research and study in the United States for one year or longer.

      Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program

      The Fulbright FLTA program, a component of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, provides young teachers of  English as a Foreign Language the opportunity to refine their teaching skills and broaden their knowledge of American cultures and customs while strengthening the instruction of foreign languages at colleges and universities in the United States.

      Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program

      The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program provides grants to lecture and/or conduct postdoctoral research at U.S. institutions for an academic semester to a full academic year.

      Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (SIR) Program

      The Fulbright SIR Program brings scholars and professionals from abroad to U.S. college and university campuses for a semester or an academic year, primarily to teach undergraduate courses. SIR grantees also assist in developing curricula and serve as a resource for faculty, students, and the community.

      Fulbright European Union Scholar-in-Residence (EUSIR) Program

      The Fulbright EUSIR Program aims to strengthen U.S. expertise in EU Affairs. The program brings scholars and professionals from EU countries to U.S. college and university campuses for semester-long grants to give guest lectures and seminars, consult with faculty and students on research, engage in collaborative study and provide outreach to neighboring institutions and the local community.

      Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program

      The Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program is designed to recognize and encourage excellence in teaching in the U.S. and abroad. Twenty-four highly talented U.S. and international teachers are selected to receive a grant to study at a university, conduct research, teach classes and workshops, and develop a project pertaining to their field of educational inquiry during their semester overseas.

      The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers fellowships for U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals, and artists to study abroad for one academic year.

      The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

      The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program sends American scholars and professionals abroad to lecture and/or conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.

      Fulbright Specialist Program

      The Fulbright Specialist Program, a short-term complement to the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program, sends U.S. faculty and professionals to serve as expert consultants on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning, and related subjects at overseas academic institutions for a period of 2 to 6 weeks.

      The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program is administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES).
