Iraq
The U.S. Department of State reestablished the Fulbright Foreign Student Program in Iraq in October 2003. Approximately 250 Iraqis have been awarded Fulbright student grants since then. Now the largest student program in the Middle East and North Africa geographic region, current participants are enrolled in master’s degree programs in fields of study that will help rebuild Iraq and contribute to its reconstruction. Such fields include, but are not limited to: public health, law, civil engineering, business, and communications.
The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq currently brings junior Iraqi scholars in selected fields to U.S. institutions for ten weeks of faculty development, mentoring, and cultural exchange activities. The program seeks to build higher education capacity in Iraq and foster long-term collaboration and institutional linkages between Iraqi and U.S. academics.
Both the Iraqi Fulbright Visiting Scholar and Student programs further the objectives articulated in the U.S.-Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement (SFA), which seeks to promote cooperation in the fields of higher education and scientific research by building higher education capacity and providing greater educational opportunities for young leaders.
